Movie Review
The Boondock Saints (1999)
January 5, 2024
★★☆☆☆

As I begin writing this, the film is only half over. I am not really invested, not nearly as much as I thought I was going to be. But Willem DaFoe is a freak in it so I'm still watching. Like, I genuinely did not expect it to be what it is, which is a poorly-done over-"fuck"ed trigger-happy deeply-90s action flick with a jarring soundtrack and confusing tone. I thought there would be a lot of gritty planning scenes or religious imagery or something, which is what I get for watching a movie based solely on one interesting sound byte sampled in the song Whatever God You Wish by Dirty Elegance (pardon the random YouTube link, I couldn't find it anywhere else; the whole album is on Spotify and you should listen to it). I guess the acting is alright, and the premise is interesting, but as the story progresses it starts to fall apart and keeps falling apart like a junk car shaking off pieces. The humor aged terribly, and probably wasn't all that funny for the time since it consists of saying "fuck" as often as possible, being mysogynistic, and saying slurs. It should have been either a) more weird/religious/gritty consistently or b) forgotten to time. Sorry. I liked the courtroom scene though. They should have ended it there.

Final thoughts: I really wish this was good. It could be so good.

Willem DaFoe carries this film.
